According to popular legend, we have Kaldi the goat herder to thank!
Kaldi was a young goat herder in the mountains of Ethiopia. One day Kaldi observed his goats acting strange. They were prancing and dancing around while they ate something new they had found. At first, Kaldi thought spirits possessed them. Kaldi spotted the goats eating from an unknown tree with red berries. Curious,
he decided to try the berries himself.
The result was a happy goat herder and a new discovery - the coffee bean.
Monks in surrounding areas took notice of this enchanted berry and soon were able to stay awake much longer than normal during their prayers. The red berry became legendary within the small towns of Ethiopia. From that moment forward, coffee was born!
This is the story of how coffee was discovered. We have the young goat herder to thank for the delicious beverage that has become an international sensation.
